The customer portal is a lightweight, guided view for external recipients – typically your clients. As a project administrator or owner you decide who gets access, and you can check what a user sees at any time.

Invite someone as a customer-portal user

Management runs through a project's members. Open Settings → Users. There you see the note: "Here you manage the project's members: invite users, change their role (e.g. owner, guest, file-attachments-only), enable or disable them, remove them and manage user groups."

  1. Next to the existing members, click the + tile. The Add people dialog opens.
  2. Enter the email address and choose the role Customer Portal.
  3. Click Save. Use Add More User to invite several people at once.

A confirmation appears: "An Invite was sent to the user". Only an administrator or owner can assign the Customer Portal role. Alternatively, a recipient automatically gets customer-portal access when you send them a document binder.

Grey status: invitation not yet accepted

Customer-portal users are grouped under the collapsible Customer Portal (n) section. As long as a user has not yet accepted the invitation, their entry is greyed out and marked Inactive.

As soon as the user signs in via the invitation link, their entry becomes active (highlighted in dark). In the same place you can later disable users, change their role or remove them.

Check the portal via preview

The „Customer-portal users in this project“ area with search, filters and the „Invitation pending“ status

As soon as a project has portal users, administrators and owners additionally see the Customer-portal users in this project tab. There you find a "Search by name or email…" box, the quick filters All users and Pending invitations, the mails sent to the user, and a Preview button. Preview opens the user's portal dashboard read-only ("Read-only — only data from this project"), showing exactly what your client sees.

The “Client portal” settings page

What portal users may do in your project is set in one place: Project settings (gear) → Security → Client portal.

  • Create tasks for users: with the switch on, client-portal users see the project's regular users when creating a task and can assign tasks to them. It is off by default – portal users can then still create tasks, but without assigning them to your team.
